چکیده

The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) Project is the major effort of the Korean National Fusion Program (KNFP) to develop a steady-state-capable advanced superconducting tokamak to establish a scientific and technological basis for an attractive fusion reactor. Major parameters of the tokamak are: major radius 1.8 m, minor radius 0.5 m, toroidal field 3.5 Tesla, and plasma current 2 mA with a strongly shaped plasma cross-section and double-null divertor. The initial pulse length provided by the poloidal magnet system is 20 s, but the pulse length can be increased to 300 s through non-inductive current drive. The plasma heating and current drive system consists of neutral beam, ion cyclotron waves, lower hybrid waves, and electron–cyclotron waves for flexible profile control. A comprehensive set of diagnostics is planned for plasma control and performance evaluation and physics understanding. The project has completed its conceptual design phase and moved to the engineering design phase. The target date of the first plasma is set for year 2002. © 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. Transport Simulations of KSTAR Advanced Tokamak Scenarios

Predictive modeling of KSTAR operation scenarios are performed with the aim of developing high performance steady state operation scenarios. Various transport codes are employed for this study. Firstly, steady state operation capabilities are investigated with time dependent simulations using a free-boundary transport code. Secondly, reproducibility of high performance steady state operation sc...

Design and Construction of the KSTAR Tokamak

The extensive design effort has been focused on two major aspects of the KSTAR project mission, steady-state operation capability and “advanced tokamak” physics. The steady-state aspect of mission is reflected in the choice of superconducting magnets, provision of actively cooled in-vessel components, and longpulse current-drive and heating systems. The “advanced tokamak” aspect of the mission ...

Voltage Sensor

The Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX) was a steady-state, tokamak to be built at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. It would have been the first tokamak in the world with an entirely superconducting magnet system. The project was terminated by the United States Congress in 1995. However, most of the TPX mission has been adopted recently by the South Korean project KSTAR (Korean Superconduc...

Lessons Learned from KSTAR Construction and Commissioning

KSTAR is an advanced tokamak with fully superconducting coils for the steady state research, which began in December 1995 and was completed in July 2008. As a single science project, it has been marked as the largest construction project in the history of Korea. During the construction period, we encountered several challenges, such as technical issues, cost overrun and schedule slippage. Never...

Design calculations for fast plasma position control in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research

We present the results of fast time scale plasma control simulations for the proposed Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak. Here, the fast plasma control includes stabilization of the vertical instability and rapid radial position control. As a simulation tool, we use the tokamak simulation code (TSC). We evaluate the power supply requirements for both the vertical an...

Overview of Recent Commissioning Results of KSTAR

KSTAR is an advanced tokamak with fully superconducting coils for the steady state plasma research. The detailed engineering design and infrastructure setup for R & D have been completed in 2001. In March 2008, after the construction period of seven years, the KSTAR assembly has been completed, by connecting the cryogenic transfer lines between the tokamak and the cryogenic distribution system....
